Tail Gunner aboard B-17G Flying Fortress #42-38010.
While on a mission to Berlin out of Ridgwell, England, was shot down by both flak and an attacking fighter. The B-17's № 1 engine was shot up and caught fire. It then exploded, disintegrating the wing and the bomber went down between Melchow and Biesenthal, Germany,
18 miles north of Berlin. Staff Sergeants Schaaf and Harm R Beninga were killed.
Seven crewmembers parachuted and survived. Missing Air Crew Report № 5178.
